Canyon Madness Ranch – Luxury American “Dude Ranch” and its comparison to private reserve African Safaris

Having just enjoyed a family vacation at 2 high-end South African safaris at private reserves, it is interesting to compare that experience with what is possible at Canyon Madness Ranch in Northeast New Mexico.

All these represent all-inclusive luxury vacation locations where guest numbers are kept to a minimum so that guests are catered to with extra attention to all their daily needs while enjoying rare and unusual activities that generate memories for a lifetime.  African safaris represent rare opportunities to experience close encounters with African wild animals.  My recent family vacation was at South Africa’s Pumba Private Reserve close to Grahamstown and at King’s Camp Game Reserve near Hoedspruit located as a part of the large Timbuvati Reserve.

In many ways, the vacation experiences are quite similar.  Both African reserve parks and lodges offered first-rate service and cuisine.  This fact alone is note-worthy because hiring employees to create the luxury vacation experience may be difficult because of the remoteness of the locations.  Yet, our accommodations were superlative, the personal care by all the staff was exemplary.   Obviously, the interactional opportunity with African wildlife transcended our expectations — this is not available outside of Africa.  At these two South African reserve parks, the safari experience could not have been better.  It was memorable for a lifetime!

Although there are very similar unique offerings at Canyon Madness Ranch (CMR), the vacation experience may be very different.  Similarities lie in the personal care by the staff and the excellence of the cuisine and beverages offered to guests on an all-inclusive basis.  Obviously, New Mexican ranches do not offer African wildlife, but we have plenty of American wildlife.  Yet the activities offered at Canyon Madness Ranch is way beyond watching and photographing animal life.  Whereas safaris offered amazing opportunities to watch, photograph or video African wildlife, a vacation at Canyon Madness Ranch allows the guests to experience what living in nineteen century America may be like.  This ranch encompasses nearly 14,000 acres of meadows, rocky canyons, and southwest mountains and valleys and it appears exactly like what early Americans may have to engage heading West to explore what the new continent had to offer.  Within these lands of unspeakable beauty and solitude, all CMR’s activities are geared to guests experiencing what early American life may be like.   We have our own wild animals too, but our consistent entertainment activities are book-ended by our Equestrian Paradise and the Firearms Wonderland — offering a wide variety of horse related activities and firearm sports, designed to suit the needs and desires of each group of guests.  The ranch boasts over fifty horses of high-caliber and high-value horses, with unusual breeds like Gypsy-Vanners. Warmbloods and more in addition to common and reliable American quarterhorses and western riding.  Our firearms division allow guests to get completely educated about all aspects of the sporting use of firearms; CMR has a first-rate pistol and rifle range and boasts one of the most beautiful skeet courses in the world.

Whereas in safaris, guests are essentially observers in all game-viewing tours, at Canyon Madness Ranch, guests are given all the opportunity to be “doers”.  We hope that guests will relish the opportunity to participate in activities that encompasses the 19^th century American experience where man lives and plays within the sublime beauty of Nature.
